From Geek To Sleek

I am a recovering geek. It has been 3 years since I was last wore sneakers with trousers. This is my story.

10 years ago, I graduated high school, full of hope and self delusion. Having gone to an all boys Catholic school, I barely knew any girls who weren't my cousins. My biggest fashion critic was my beautiful mother. While her heart was in the right place, it became painfully obvious a few years later, that her eyes were not. Occasionally, she felt the maternal need to connect with me at a deeper level, so she used to take me shopping and pick out my "outfits". (Tip: Unless invited to a fancy dress ball, men DO NOT wear outfits)

After school, I moved to go to college, taking along with me my unique sense of style.

My wardrobe included:

  • Loose fitting shirts and trousers.
  • A stack of t-shirts and jeans
  • 1 dark grey suit with an over-sized jacket
  • 1 pair of black shoes
  • 3 pairs of sneakers

I maintained this wardrobe throughout college and into my new job, occasionally replacing a worn out item with a new one purchased from a discount store.

So, how did it all change for me?

Well, I'd like to tell you that I met someone who changed my life, but it was nothing as Hollywood as that. I just got frustrated of being invisible. As I waited for something to happen, I observed both men and women and how they reacted with one another. Very often, the pretty girls hung out with men who were fairly average to look at. They were not incredibly smart or rich either. In fact, some of them were the missing link between chimp and human. You know, big guy, wears a baseball hat, everything to him is "awesome" and he calls everyone "dude". Even those guys were with beautiful women. Surely I had hope.

So, what do you do with a chimp? You observe them. I started to observe these chimps and their girlfriends from a scientific point of view.

I took pictures of these people (creepy, I know), eavesdropped into their conversations and took notes.

I had a lot of observations but they essentially come down to these:

1. Confidence: The women reacted more favorably to confident guys. (Even if they didn't say anything profound, which was usually the case)

2. Physique: A lot of these guys had pretty decent physiques. They were not really big built. Some of them were really fit and muscular while others just had broad shoulders but weren't incredibly muscular. Very few of the hot girls were with skinny guys.

3. Clothes: The men tended to wear brighter colors and a lot of fitted clothes that showed off their physique a little better.

Based on these observations, and a lot of notes, I decided to transform my life by taking baby steps to change myself. It took me about a year before I tasted success and up to that point, I faced a lot of failures too.

This blog is my diary.
